Hi Dan, A few thoughts here. If you find your virtual machine is running poorly you might try assigning more ram to the virtual machine. A lot of lag issues are related to not providing enough physical ram for the virtual machine to run screen readers and other applications together. For example, on my Toshiba I have 3 GB of ram. I have found giving Windows 7 2 GB and Windows XP 1 GB of ram usually is a decent balance in ram between the two operating systems. The more physical memory you have assigned to your virtual machine the better it will run since virtual machines reside almost exclusively in memory.
Second, do remember that NVDA was written in Python. While Python is a decent programming language one of its issues, especially the 2.x version, is that its execution speeds is sometimes slower than a native language like C++. What this means is that NVDA will perform poorly on systems like a virtual machine where CPU power and/or memory isn't powerful enough to execute the Python code quickly. In cases like that I find a screen reader written in native C++ such as Window-Eyes does perform a bit better on virtual machines. However, NVDA is doable if your virtual machine has enough CPU power and memory to handle the screen reader. In short, the best advice I can give here is go into your virtual machine properties and assign as many resources as you can to the guest operating system and play around with it until you get an acceptable balance of resources between host and guest operating systems. This can take some trial and error, and don't be surprised if you don't get it the first couple of tries. Windows 7, of course, requires at least 1 GB of ram, and at least 1 GHZ of processor power to run as your host operating system so you can deduct that much away from your over all system resources when figuring how much to give to your guest OS. Cheers!
