Ben, The easiest way is just to use real money, but I totally understand that isn't an option sometimes. To help out, I set up a money market in the game to let players buy and sell credits anonymously to each other using gold, so you can use gold you get to buy credits. The price of a credit is pretty high though - it takes a lot of gold to buy a credit most of the time. I'd plan on a price of around a thousand gold per credit.
Another option is to trade equipment or other things that players want for gold or credits. There's a couple of people on the game that have literally got all their credits simply by trading valuable stuff to others. I've found that it's often easier for me to get gold by trading than it is to try to run it myself. To take a look at the money market, use the 'mmarket' command in game, or try 'help money market'.
