I think there are large advantages to using standard and widely adopted formats, so JSON gets my vote there. That's not to say PB isn't widely used, but I suspect there are a lot more tools and programming language bindings to read and process JSON data. Or...why not just use XDR for bulk data transport, instead of introducing a third format (XML, XDR, and JSON/PB)?
