That sounds like an excellent code revival project. Feel free to set  
up a project page and champion it. You might also want to look at  
other code bases that have portability layers, such as the ACL-COMPAT  
in Portable Allegro Serve and the code in SLIME (SWANK actually).  
Just make sure you keep track of licensing issues--PORT is under LGPL  
or GPL if I recall correctly while ACL-COMPAT is probably LLGPL and  
the SWANK code, again IIRC, BSD.
