While that IS a valid test, Leon, I have found after being the Admin for
nine years that I need to moderate with a loose leash. I will normally wait
a couple of days to see if a thread is going to become long and involved
before I jerk the leash.

Typically, the post that you referred to below will not even garner any
responses and it will die a natural death without Admin intervention.

I think the test is: IS THIS GATOR-RELATED? Right Randy One? I don't think
folks who register for Gatortalk are interested in becoming a licensed
contractor.

Maybe I'm wrong.

not a dead end
I assume that we can discuss this on GatorTalk and not have to move to THFGT
....

I play this temporary contractor game and have a lot of experience with it.

The lines have blurred between hiring consultants and temporary contractors.
I've done consulting/contracting for over 20 years now. I guess the
difference is whether they listen or not :-)

I receive the bulk of my leads by scanning through Craigslist. My second
and third source of leads are VirtualVocations..com and Dice.com

My goal is to go 100% virtual and get a place on Lake Santa Fe. I wouldn't
be too far from Jacksonville airport when I needed to travel. Wouldn't be
too far from Gville for special events.

Anyways .... regarding difference in pay - contractors have to pay ALL their
own taxes, health insurance, get no holidays, vacations, sick days, and
other benefits.

As a "permanent employee" (some people think there is such a thing - whereas
I've seen tens of millions of "permanent employees" laid off in the last 10
years) you are suppose to get health care, other benefits, vacation, sick
days, and the employer pays half of your medicare and social security taxes.

I have been told on jobs around $50 per hour - the differential is about $8
per hour. In other words, a permanent job paying around $50 per hour is
equivalent in pay to a contracting job paying around $58 per hour.

A lot of employers like hiring temp to perm people because they can "try"
employees before they "buy" them.

See if they can show up for work on time, everyday. How much baggage and
drama do they have. Can they get along with coworkers. Can they work
independently and part of a team, blah, blah, blah.

These "researchers" at UF should have contacted staffingfirms to get all
this information.

The problem is - if more people knew how to work as independent contractors,
how the taxes, self 401K and other expense deductions worked - I think that
more people would prefer working this way.

1. I don't know where people can get "permanent", private sector jobs
anymore

2. I no longer believe in a concept of a "permanent" job.

UF study: Temp jobs not a dead end
South Florida Business Journal

In fact, a new University of Florida study finds that those hired by
temporary agencies actually earn higher hourly wages and are better
educated than permanent employees.

"There has been concern by some advocacy groups that the temporary
help industry is creating an entire class of people who are churning
through temporary-help jobs and can't escape from that cycle," said
Sarah Hamersma, a UF economist and lead author, in a news release. "We
find no reason to believe that a large number of temp workers are
'stuck' in a secondary labor market."

Hamersma and Carolyn Heinrich, a University of Wisconsin public
affairs professor, studied occupational records, wages and earnings
for 5,877 Wisconsin workers between 1995 and 2004.

Of the 3,964 employees who held at least one temporary job, 3,947 held
a permanent job at some time in those 10 years, the study found.
Further analysis found that, of those who changed jobs over a
four-month period, more than three-fourths of those in temporary
positions moved into traditional jobs, while only 23 percent took
another temporary job.

The study also found temporary workers received about 15 percent more
pay than those in traditional positions. The study suggests they are
paid more because job conditions are less desirable.

"Paying temp workers more is consistent with having to handle the
insecurity and other characteristics that are inferior to a regular
job," Hamersma said in the news release.

One of the biggest drawbacks of temporary work is its short duration,
which makes it difficult for employees to build a foundation of
experience necessary for job security, Hamersma said.

More than half of all temporary jobs in the sample - 56 percent -
lasted no more than three months, and an additional 25 percent lasted
no more than six months, she said.

"While I was surprised at how short those jobs were, what was even
more surprising is that 45 percent of non-temporary jobs lasted less
than three months," she said. "Unfortunately, we don't know why -
whether workers quit or were fired, got sick or had child care
issues."
