I was a Florida High School Activity Association referee for about 15 years, and I can assure you that we were paid, including mileage...at the start of each game in cash. We always rode together in one car to the game and were the first out of the parking lot after the game for obvious reasons...someone didn't like us after the game at every game.
Let me assure you that referees earn their money. We attended required training sessions monthly and prior to every sport, bought our own uniforms, whistles, flags, etc. The rulebooks for each sport had to be studied and memorized. Quizes were given frequently by the association. After-game videos were watched by the crew and the officiating was self-critiqued. For those who think officials try to influence the outcome of the game, I couldn't tell you which school had the ball most of the time...it was just a color to me...'white ball.' Most of the club sports get some funding from the university. Some use that for coaching stipends, others for travel or training needs. I played Lacrosse at UF and we had two coaches that received stipends, our jerseys were paid for and the officials, etc all came out of the student activity fees.
