FWIW - the term sweeper was first used in sports in soccer. It usually referred
to the last defender, whose role was different from the other defenders because
his primary responsibility wasn't to guard ( or "man mark") a particular
attacker on the other team, but to clean up, or "sweep" the attacks that made
it past everyone else.

Since there was no fixed marking assignment for this player, some progressive
teams allowed that player the freedom ( liberty - libero ) to move forward and
join his team in attack when it was warranted.

Back to football...

Not the "L" word!

Seriously, what does this word mean? The dictionary says "sweeper" like a
person with a broom.
Is this now volleyball slang?
