Yes this is because HPUX's as puts in timestamps into the .s file Please read: http://gcc.gnu.org/install/specific.html#hppa-hp-hpux11 Though it does not mention this issue but you should try a different version of binutils first. -- http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=26508
