Yes, We do use quite a few of the low voltage halogen lamps with our geckos.
There are many different brands available but the ones we use come in kits
with up to 5 lights and a 120 watt dimmable transformer. Different brands
have different configurations but the most common ones have three foot lamp
cords which will give you a maximum spacing of six foot (2 m) between lamps.
Some systems also have low voltage extension cords that will extend their
reach to well over ten feet.
There are so many variables involved in spot temperatures such as ambient
temp, color of substrate, screen type, airflow, etc. it is hard to give an
exact temp. From our experience a 10 watt halogen will average a 8 deg F.
increase at 6", 20 watt 12 deg. F at 6", and 50 watt 30 deg. F at 6". Most
of the systems are dimmable so I always recommend buying a higher wattage or
doubling up on lamps then dimming them to get the proper temp. Dimming also
greatly extends the life of the bulbs sometimes doubling or tripling the
bulb life. You mileage may vary depending on brand and situation.
