But they don't need to upgrade to the latest distro and version.
They only need to install the appropriate libraries, and
possibly a more recent compiler. If they are building from
source, they can build the library from source too.
And buold the lib, this lib requires,...
gtk used to be a neat little lib, that used to build without problems,
but today, it has turned into a huge complicated beast.
There is a real problem with configure, in that it usually does
a bunch of checks it doesn't need, and when it fails, usually
by not finding something, the information it gives is not very
useful.
Unfortunately, configure test fail way to often, because they are
incorrect (not really portable). :-(
I think we need to go back to the essence of free software, or
open-source if that is your preference. If you have source you
can deal with the issues, and leave it at that.
I agree with you on this point. And my personal hope for this case is
that, if the majority of people compile their software from source code
again, more and more will complain about these endlessly growing
dependancies.
Now if someone could convince the autoconf people that they no
longer need to support that 1975 integer only C compiler, maybe
it too could improve.
Perhaps wi should convince ourself to get back to the 1975 approace of
manually editing config files. A config file with reasonalbe linux
setting would be a good startig point for today. Anybody who uses a
different environment does usually know quit well, what he has to hange
t get things working.
You could just type make an see, where problems arise, With autoconf,
you do not even have a Makefile, until you nanaged to ./configure
sucessfully. :-(
