I think that Geeqie should follow the "legacy metadata reconciliation" as 
described in http://www.adobe.com/devnet/xmp/pdfs/XMPSpecificationPart3.pdf
pages from 63, and that is should be implemented in Exiv2.

With Exiv2 0.18 it works well enough, but there is a room for improvements.
