I recently bought a used PowerMac 8500 and installed Yellow Dog Linux (http://www.yellowdoglinux.com) on it. YDL uses RPM and has lots of neato features like YUP (YDL Updater), etc.
I also read that Darwin (the BSD core of Mac OSX) now runs on some PowerPC chips, including my 8500! So, I'm going to attempt to install Darwin and later OSX on my 8500. Which brings me to my question: are there any Mac geeks on this mailing list? It's been a heck of a while since I played with a Mac at length, but it seems easy enough. I have a few questions, like: Can I run some kinda video editing app like iMovie on MacOS 8.0.1? Where would I download files? etc, etc. I'm hoping to generate more interest in Mac OSX in the BRLUG, since it is UNIX at its core. The move by Apple to an open source based kernel was one of the biggest events in the last few years to support the open source movement. I am very surprised that there hasn't been more excitement about it in the open source community. The PowerPC chip is very fast for the price: I paid $100 for the PowerMac 8500 (128MB RAM, 8GB ext drive) and monitor. I plan to make it a development server running either Linux for PPC or OSX.
