Ed Richards and others at the CCCC say you should use a trawling battery 
that's designed for slow and deep discharge.  You might also look into nickle 
iron and other batteries.

There seems to be a lot of low power hardware around now.  I've heard good 
things about the Slug and older Lynksis access points.  If I was really going 
to be without power for a month, I was going to drop down to my Zaurus.

The OLPC was made for situations like this.  It has a nice pull generator and 
lasts for ten hours.
