to which I'd like to add the following requests:

   - please use '>' to indent what you're replying to
- please insert a blank line before and after what you're replying to

Emphatically +1 to both trimming and adding blank lines. It would save a lot of time reading mail.

For people using Apple's Mail, if you see quoted text with a solid vertical line (or two or three etc) to the left of it, that's the same as using ">" to indent what you are replying to (as is the case with this message for me.)
