wait till you have your required months at gentoo, then you mentor him,
if you truly like his work, tell him you have to wait before you can
mentor him, iirc 6 months from joining?
he could wait till then, and maybe appreciate your working relationship
even more, 6 months is a nice time to see if his performance is
consitent too

no dev has to refer anyone to someone else unless they are not long
enough with the project, and then it is only a matter of time :)
