Because we don't have a *recent* usable blackdown JRE, and the one we do
have is chock full of security holes and bugs.

I am not a Java guru, just using it, and I use jedit and several other utilities that are purely Java app (not fast, but runs okay), and how bad is the JRE of blackdown-sparc? Is it that bad that OOo can hardly work? When I use OOo 1.1.4 I got tons of problems but most of them seems (obviously) not related to JRE.
