May I know what's your opinion in how difficult to install a full desktop (GNOME) on solaris compare installing them on gentoo? Do I need to take many steps and expect many package conflicts (like I experienced with RedHat several years ago)?
I am thinking about getting rid of the current sparc kit and buy a Pentium box. My sparc kit could be well used as a server. Or, do you think I should switch to solaris for my desktop (since I heard it's going to be OSS soon)? Is GNOME for solaris pretty stable? As well as other desktop applications like mozilla and OOo? Do solaris package management system much worse then Gentoo's?
IMHO, Solaris may be an alternative for you because it provides you with a working java implementation and a working flash implementation.
The counterpart is the package and update(patching) system of solaris which
is very unintuitive.
You may want to check www.blastwave.org which provides you with free
binary packages of opensource projects.
I think I will wait until solaris go OSS, for it's stupid to buy anything that is almost OSS.
Besides, is the 'working flash implementation' the product of macromedia? Flash is important to me because we are currently using a customer relationship webapp that builts UI with flash (odd, though) that requires macromedia flash > 6. Currently I have to use remote X to connect to a colleuage's SuSE linux to use the webapp.
