Because we don't have a *recent* usable blackdown JRE, and the one we do
have is chock full of security holes and bugs.
I don't fully get you. Are you serious?
I am not a Java guru, just using it, and I use jedit and several other utilities that are purely Java app (not fast, but runs okay), and how bad is the JRE of blackdown-sparc? Is it that bad that OOo can hardly work? When I use OOo 1.1.4 I got tons of problems but most of them seems (obviously) not related to JRE.
Okay, perhaps I am a bit outdated. Looking into the blackdown website it seems nothing is going on, and the webpages are barely maintained. I again by googling around found that looks there are few people interest on developing JRE for linux on sparc.
I am thinking about getting rid of the current sparc kit and buy a Pentium box. My sparc kit could be well used as a server. Or, do you think I should switch to solaris for my desktop (since I heard it's going to be OSS soon)? Is GNOME for solaris pretty stable? As well as other desktop applications like mozilla and OOo? Do solaris package management system much worse then Gentoo's?
The real pain of using sparc (for me) as desktop is the lack of, macromedia flash.
