I think the most stable would still be 2.6.6 (think it was
development-sources which don't exist anymore?). It ran perfectly on my U60
with allmost the same specs as yours, except mine had 1GB RAM and had two
18GB drives in RAID0.
I have no idea what PROM version I had, but it sure wasn't the latest
around.
