Following on from Chris's question, right now if I do an emerge -Dp
world I get a pretty radical looking list of things that are going to
happen:

Wizard usr # emerge -Dp world

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating world dependencies ...done!
[ebuild U ] sys-apps/reiserfsprogs-3.6.8 [3.6.4-r1]
[ebuild U ] app-cdr/xcdroast-0.98_alpha10-r3 [0.98_alpha10-r2]
[ebuild U ] sys-libs/db-3.2.9-r2 [3.2.9-r1]
[ebuild U ] sys-apps/portage-2.0.48 [2.0.47-r10]
*** Portage will stop merging at this point and reload itself,
recalculate dependancies, and complete the merge.
You may avoid the remerging of packages by updating portage on its
own.

[ebuild U ] app-admin/gentoolkit-0.1.25 [0.1.23]
[ebuild U ] app-admin/sysklogd-1.4.1-r4 [1.4.1-r3]
[ebuild U ] sys-apps/shadow-4.0.3-r6 [4.0.3-r3]
[ebuild U ] sys-apps/e2fsprogs-1.33 [1.32-r2]
[ebuild U ] sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.4.20-r5 [2.4.20-r2]
[ebuild U ] net-www/mozilla-1.3-r1 [1.2.1-r5]
[ebuild U ] app-games/frozen-bubble-1.0.0-r1 [1.0.0]
[ebuild N ] media-sound/mad-0.14.2b-r2
[ebuild U ] kde-base/arts-1.1.2 [1.1.1]
[ebuild U ] kde-base/kdelibs-3.1.2 [3.1.1a]
[ebuild U ] kde-base/kdegames-3.1.2 [3.1.1]

Wizard usr #

I'm pretty hesitant to tell the box to do this, but so far the box is
not in a critical role yet, other than just doing email.

This looks like a long process. I'm in no rush. I could start it late
this evening and let it run overnight.

What have people been doing about this?

Thanks,
Mark
