Follow the directions exactly. If you haven't done the
bootstrap.sh you won't get far. Forget the upgrade at
this point. The ebuild probably has the message in it and
it's meant for those with systems installed. Usually when
portage has to be updated it will do it automatically,
then you can start the merge over.

I was just
trying to follow the instructions in the warning and
upgrade portage
before installing anything else.
Is there an rc5 in the works that will include the new
emerge? It seems
like that would eliminate a lot of questions that this
"update emerge"
message is likely to cause.
