AFAIK : ever since portage .47 version there are new options :
userpriv and usersandbox, when enabled portage will drop root
privileges when compiling and recover them when installing, this is a
security feature. In order to solve the problem, you can either remove
userpriv and usersandbox from the FEATURES line in your make.conf, or
make portage a user of the portage group (When dropping root
privileges, portage becomes portage:portage).
