Maybe, you should jEdit give a chance. It is written in Java and is my choice as a replacement for XEmacs. It has some nice features as syntax highlightning, advanced searching, macro recording and shortcuts for all types of commands (all can be configured from the gui-menu), but is not overloaded as many other editors.
