Thoughts
#1 Emerge has some benefits (make.conf USE variables) over the BSD's packages system but the interactive configuration in the ports system can be nicer. The two combined would be great.

Example of interactive build in FreeBSD:
When building mod_php4 a shell applicaiton runs that asks what extensions you want build (there's about 25) and you can turn on or off the ones you don't want.
Adding USE variables would turn on and off the rights ones and then you could adjust them to your needs

#2 Kernels should not have parts that are incompatible with other parts of the kernel.

#3 atapi cdrw drives have been around for 5+ years they should just work. After reading fifty poorly written pages of HOWTO and website I gave up and just reboot to FreeBSD

This is the first (Weekly?) gentoo poll.

The question is:

What operating system were you using BEFORE you used gentoo?
