It seriously sounds like you have some hardware that is less than up to the task, I'd strongly suspect bad ram, which causes no end of problems. I'd even seen it only turn on when I had a box fully optimized with Gentoo, as it didn't show up with the unoptimized Redhat that just didn't push it far enough. Grab one of the recent livecds, and at the initial cd prompt, run 'memtest'.
