I'm using SATA. Not only the SATA controller but also SATA drives connected to it. :-) All I can say is, that I wasn't able to use the SATA drives with the Asus A7V600 Motherboard. I switched to the Asus A7N8X Deluxe board with its Silicon Image 3112 (SATA) Chip, which is supported by Linux. Its no problem at all to use the A7V600 without SATA drives. Check /usr/src/linux/drivers/ide/raid to be sure.
