What's your grub line? Assuming your kernel is /boot/vmlinux-2.6.0-test8, you would 
want the following lines in grub: (Remember to change your (hdx,x) lines and kernel 
lines as necessary.)

title=Linux 2.6.0-test8
root (hd0,0)
kernel (hd0,0)/boot/vmlinux-2.6.0-test8
