Gentoo does setup additional startup files for writer, spreadsheet, etc., but I have no problem starting soffice (that's the name) and then selecting the appropriate document type to open. Most of the time I just grab the binary from the OO website and put the networked version it in /opt. It's going to be slow starting for you with a slow machine (particular if you don't have a lot of memory), but you can leave it running. In my case (Athlon-XP 1800+ with 512M) it's about 10 seconds to start.
