With a slow machine you'll need in excess of 24 hours, my guess.  I'd say forget
it.

In my opinion, not much.  Gentoo does setup additional startup files for writer,
spreadsheet, etc., but I have no problem starting soffice (that's the name) and
then selecting the appropriate document type to open.

Most of the time I just grab the binary from the OO website and put the
networked version it in /opt.

It's going to be slow starting for you with a slow machine (particular if you
don't have a lot of memory), but you can leave it running.  In my case
(Athlon-XP 1800+ with 512M) it's about 10 seconds to start.  For you it could be
as much as a minute.
