FYI, I own no laptops, but I have 6-8 b-o-r-i-n-g months of 2.5.x/2.6.x flying monkeys 
under my belt.  Meanwhile I've missed out on all the screwing around gentoo has been 
doing messing with the 2.4.x officially approved kernels!  My general impression is 
that your laptop is less likely to break with 2.6 than 2.4 at this point.
