Ok, thanks Canek... but my last question remains... if this really is
going to be the only and one true way to opt out of systemd, shouldn't
this be well documented in the man page, as opposed to just generic
references to masking 'files'...?

Actually, this isn't how you opt out of systemd. You do that by having "-systemd" in your USE flags. Just because the unit files are present doesn't mean you're now using systemd.
