I've also solved a lot of my problems by disabling the arts sound system in KDE and just using straight up ALSA. I think back in the days of OSS something like arts or esd was really needed since OSS only allowed one process to use it at once, but now arts really gets in the way. I was recently trying to do some recording and couldn't for the life of me get the recording software (Audacity) to both play what I've recorded and record at the same time. Once I turned off arts the program Just Worked (TM).
