We didn't tested yet the 1.7.3 binaries provided by the link you have reported but I guess they will work. However, there are a few changes from ImageIO-Ext 1.0.8 to 1.1 which also required little changes on GeoTools libraries (which are the core of GeoServer) whilst you are constrained to use GS 1.7.7. I'm also cc-ing Simone Giannecchini in case he would add more info on this.
