I would do what follows:
- reprocess them as 8 bits performing a color expansion
- add overview with bilinear or bicubic resampling
If you don't want to do that, you may want to try and ask the imagemosaic
to expand the palette to RGB but without proper overviews quality will
suffer anyway.
