Small clarification Andrea,

You will find they are both working off the GeoAPI "Grid Coverage 
Exchange" model (ie Format and GridCoverageReader etc...). We have tried 
to update it to match the ISO Coverage model (when it became apparent 
that the OGC had dropped the Grid Coverage Exchange specification.

 From the GeoTools library level both implementations are treated the 
same - as implementations of GridCoverageReader. When ever I see both 
competition and collaboration it makes me trust an API more; it means 
there are several stake holders attacking the model from different 
angles resulting in a better product.

The uDig community may of given you the impression that imageio-ext work 
was more focused on performance (because that is what we are excited 
about over there). At a low level they are all doing the same scientific 
work and take this stuff very seriously.
