Initially, the imageio-ext-gdal module have been removed from the standard
build whilst we were working on licensing issues.
Therefore that module was intended as an extraordinary one to be involved
only on request.
The profile option is a solution which allows to avoid the gdal module when
this is not desired.
Therefore, if you don't provide the profile, neither the imageio-ext-gdal
nor its dependency on the coverage-tools will be involved although the
coverage-tools will build fine without any error.

As specified in the previous rows, the actual behavior would be to exclude
any reference to the imageio-ext-gdal stuff if you don't explicitly state
(using the profile) that you are really interested on involving it.
Therefore, as expected, the dependency won't be obtained by default.
