I have been using the StyledMapPane and its renderer and it offers a much better performance than the JMapPane.
I understand that porting it to the current version represents a lot of work, and is maybe not a priority, but could you give an idea of how long it would take?

The Geotools PMC decided to remove it from the distribution because it was still
depending on deprecated code (the legact Coordinate Transformation Services
(CTS) framework), and I didn't had the time to port it yet.
StyledMapPane is still on the SVN in a separated branch:
http://svn.geotools.org/geotools/branches/legacy/
I use it as a base material for GO-1 development, which is targeted as the
StyledMapPane replacement (but not ready yet).
