If speed is something you are after you can also look at the presentation I sent out, it shows the use of a hint for JMapPane that will cache the feature in memory, you could also talk to Andrea about making JMapPane faster. I am under the impression that JMapPane can be set up with the J2D renderer (ie the one that was formally used by StyledMapPane as well).
