For me, it was not a map or mapping book, but computer scientist David Gelernter's 1992 book Mirror Worlds that got me thinking about geo projects. While he's mainly interested in proposing a new model (as it were) of computing, he paints a vivid picture of what it could be like to learn about and affect the world by interacting with its computerized "reflection."
