Fingerprints? Try face smudges. Ewwwww.
Not sure how they'll sell it over here in the UK. A £25/month contract
will usually score you a free handset of the order of a SE W950 or Nokia
N73. Not entirely convinced that there is a market (over here at least)
the will pay an extra ~£400 for what is for most people a commodity item
- ie a camera phone that plays music.
Never underestimate Apple's abilty to appeal to the unwashed masses
even in
the face of more cost effective alternatives. PT Barnum was right.
I don't doubt for a minute that you're right. However, pound-for-pound
the iPod range is fairly competitive with offerings from Samsung,
Philips etc. Likewise their PC hardware. This is something else though -
they're actually asking for people to buy a phone. Phones are free. OK,
you might pay a nominal £50 for a bleeding edge model, but £400? Maybe
they'll have a different pricing structure over here, but the concept of
buying a phone and the size of the price seems like a huge barrier to
the mass market.
Most people take the shiny free phone when offered, and it doesn't do
much and they either say "ho hum" or complain about it. Some people
actually care about features, and usability, and heck, some even care
about the "wow/cool" factor - those people are willing to pay for
phones. The iPhone just might have enough features, good usability, and
the "wow/cool" factor to make people think that buying a phone is a good
idea.
