Good point -- NNTP exactly.

That said, I haven't run a news reader in years.  But I think it's true that
mailing lists are on their way to obsolescence, and I've started lots of
them in my time.

That said, I'm afraid I wouldn't monitor geowanking as much as I do if it
didn't come through my inbox.  Traffic is kind of bursty, and unfortunately
a lot of it is relatively over my head or outside my experience, but there
is still a lot of interesting stuff I pick up through you all (thanks!).

But forums are super easy to set up, and as small as the geowanking
community is, the admin burden for a phpBB kind of thing probably would be
less than email.  But not all technologies are right for all communities.
