One simple way to discuss this in the short term is to start "wanking"
on the various spatially-enabled, Yahoo Pipes-like tools. I know this
isn't as meta or universal as you're talking about, but it's a place
we can mess around with coding and not just talk theory.

Here's my list of "pipe" apps:
Yahoo Pipes: http://pipes.yahoo.com
IBM QEDWiki: http://services.alphaworks.ibm.com/qedwiki/
Microsoft connected services sandbox: http://www.networkmashups.com/
Fuji: http://www.tbray.org/ongoing/When/200x/2008/06/02/JBI

By the way, what's the difference between what you're talking about
and the "Enterprise Application Integration" (EAI) term the corporate
world uses?
