I'm still not sure that I fully understand what you are talking about.
However, Project Wonderland is free open source software for creating
real-time 3d environments:

There is also a nice writeup about Project Wonderland from a recent
technical session at JavaOne about one month ago:

Based on your comments about Second Life, I suspect that Project
Wonderland may not meet your requirements either. Still, I thought it
was at least worth mentioning.
