I would recommend getting a Garmin Legend (or Vista) HCx. You can set it to log location/elevation/time to a GPX-format file on the SD card once per second while it is turned on. There are some other device recommendations at http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/GPS_Reviews Eric
