Damon,

We could offer some more specific advice if you could tell us a little
bit more about why you are learning about GIS and what you specific
goals are. Perhaps you would benefit from an introductory text on GIS?

I agree with the earlier suggestion to pick-up a Garmin GPS receiver to
get started. The Garmin Gecko is relatively inexpensive and works well
for the most simple needs:

You can download the waypoints that you collect with your Garmin into a
free program called EasyGPS:

Subject: [Geowanking] Good place to start for newbies

Hello all,

I am new to the GIS field and wondering the best online resource for
learning about GIS (not wikipedia). I would like to learn how to track
myself with GPS devices, learn about the formats that data saves in, and
I suppose the bare basics of GIS. Any direction is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Damon
