Contacting the list before running to a pet store and buying the first
gerbil you saw was a very good idea. The difference between a pet store
gerbil and one bred by a professional gerbil breeder is very distinct. A pet
store gerbil is not guaranteed to be in good health, and sadly most of them
aren't. As in one from a breeder, you can be sure you're getting a sweet,
healthy creature that was brought up lovingly and cared ofr greatly.
<< I also want to know what these animals are like. Do they run off and
make themselves hard to catch?

Gerbils will love their owners just so long as the owner loves their
gerbil! This means playing with the gerbil, giving it attention, and making
sure it stays happy and healthy. As for running off, like all small animals,
gerbils may try to escape from their cage. This shouldn't be a problem,
because most gerbils (from my experiences, anyway) bore of being out of the
cage, and enjoy playing games of hide and seek- and when you're not in the
mood to play, they'll come out from hiding and basically give up (LOL).
One more thing I should add- gerbils are social animals and enjoy being
with humans as well as their own kind. So a single gerbil in a cage will
definately be happier if he/she has a playmate for when the human doesn't
want to play (;. And if you want to make sure you get two gerbils that are
sexed properly (i.e. boy/boy or girl/girl so that you can avoid mating), I
suggest either buying one from a local breeder you might have near you, or
having one shipped. So why not tell us a little bit more about you, like
where you're from, and if you have any other pets? (: Talk to you soon.
