I have a four year old son, too.  He has been nipped due to holding a gerbil
not to the gerbil's liking, but they do well overall.  He understands he has
to have adult supervision to do anything other than LOOK at the gerbils in
their cage.  He has an older brother who polices the gerbils which makes it
easier.  I like gerbils over, say, hamsters because the gerbils are more
active and curious during the day.
