I didn't use the split cage method. The pair I got from the petshop were
suppose to be male and weren't. They had 5 pups and I took dad out. Then at
5 weeks of age I split Mom and daughter to another tank and cleaned the
large tank out really well. Put fresh bedding in and then placed 4 male
pups back in and then put dad in. I forget how long I closely watched them,
a few hours I believe. Everything went great and they still get alone fine
together. I believe if the pups were older than 5 weeks I would have done a
split cage to be safe.

Merry Meet Will,

We use the split cage method it works the best IHMO. Though the gerbils can
be quite ingenius about getting on the other side. It takes patience and a
little perserverence to make sure that they wont get to each other until
they, and you, are ready.

Blessed Be,
Kathwynn, Cecelia and The MossFlower clan
