Question about shipping

I have a question.  I have been told that it is illegal to ship a gerbil or other animal through the USPS.  Is this true?  If so what shipping service are people using to ship their gerbils?    If it is throught the USPS and it is illegal, then the carriers do not know that they handling a live animal.  Isn't that dangerous to the gerbils?   I would like to beable to ship gerbils at sometime in the future.  How is it done?   Janet
