It works.  I sometimes find though that it is better for females with
pups not to be able to see other gerbils, so the sides and back of
all my tanks are blocked with paper or paint.

The main thing to remember is to use hand cleaner between each
tank, and remove all gerbil smells before going into the next tank.
I usually handle with bare arms, and don't let them climb my front,
so I can wash off between.  Gerbils don't mind hamster smells IF
you handle everyone out of the tank so they all smell the same...
(usually only with my solo animals).  Best is to wash or otherwise
remove the smells in between.

The other thing is if  you get more than one out you may have
clashes.  Or unwanted breeding.  Odds are very low, but I had
one litter that I attribute to that.  (she got out, and he got out...
and she was in heat...)
