Well I have all my Gerbils (24) in one room . its about 12x12  I keep the
females on one side and the males on the other. I had a tank near a female
tank and the two males that where beside them, one was dead the next morning
and I think it was because they smelled the females and he wanted to be the
one who mated them so he killed his brother. I keep them apart now and no
problems.
That's my 2 cents.
